Tax Bracket Calculator — How Progressive Tax Works
Progressive tax systems apply different rates to different portions of income — not your entire income at the highest rate. For example, a US single filer earning $100,000 in 2024 pays 10% on the first $11,600, 12% on income from $11,600–$47,150, and 22% on the remainder after the standard deduction. The effective rate (total tax ÷ income) is always lower than the marginal rate (the rate on your last dollar of income). The US 2024 standard deduction of $14,600 reduces taxable income before brackets apply. The UK personal allowance (£12,570) works similarly. India's new tax regime (2024-25) eliminated most deductions in exchange for lower rates. Understanding your marginal rate helps with decisions like Roth vs traditional retirement contributions.
