Serving Size Calculator — How to Scale Recipes Up or Down
Scaling a recipe is straightforward: divide the desired servings by the original servings to get the scale factor, then multiply each ingredient by that factor. A recipe for 4 serving scaled to 8 uses a 2× factor. The main challenge is unit conversion — 16 tablespoons become 1 cup, 3 teaspoons become 1 tablespoon. Our calculator handles these conversions automatically with smart unit simplification. When scaling baking recipes, note that leavening agents (baking soda, baking powder) and spices often don't scale linearly — use about 80% of the calculated amount for very large batches. Cooking times may also need adjustment when batch sizes change significantly, especially for baked goods. Always taste and adjust seasonings after scaling.
