Aspect ratio is the proportional relationship between an image's width and height. Different platforms have specific requirements: Instagram posts work best at 1:1 (square) or 4:5; YouTube thumbnails require 16:9; Instagram Stories and TikTok use 9:16 vertical format; Pinterest performs well at 2:3 or 1:1.91. Traditional photo prints use 3:2 (4×6, 6×9) or 5:4 (8×10). Cropping to the correct aspect ratio prevents platforms from auto-cropping your image in unexpected ways.
