The MD Family: MD2, MD4, and MD5
The Message Digest (MD) family of hash functions was designed by Ronald Rivest. While they were once widely used, most are now considered cryptographically broken and unsuitable for security-critical applications.
Variants:
- MD5: The most famous variant. Still widely used for non-cryptographic checksums (like verifying file downloads) due to its speed, but vulnerable to collision attacks.
- MD4: A predecessor to MD5, optimized for 32-bit computers. It is now considered insecure.
- MD2: An earlier, slower version designed for 8-bit computers. It is also obsolete.
