The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) and American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) define cat life stages differently from the old "multiply by 7" rule. A cat's first year corresponds to approximately 15 human years due to rapid physical maturation. By 2 years, a cat is roughly equivalent to a 24-year-old human. After that, each cat year adds approximately 4 human years. Indoor cats typically live 12–18 years; outdoor cats have significantly shorter lifespans of 5–7 years due to traffic, predators, and disease exposure. The oldest verified cat, Creme Puff, lived to 38 years (equivalent to roughly ~170 human years).
