The traditional "multiply by 7" rule for dog years is an oversimplification. Modern veterinary science shows that dogs age rapidly in their first two years (a 1-year-old dog is approximately equivalent to a 15-year-old human), then slow down — and the rate depends heavily on size. Small dogs like Chihuahuas and Pomeranians can live 14–16 years; giant breeds like Great Danes typically live only 8–10 years. A 2021 Nature Aging study confirmed that dogs follow an epigenetic aging curve that scales logarithmically, not linearly. This calculator uses size-adjusted age tables based on AKC veterinary guidelines.
