Car Lease Calculator — Money Factor, Residual Value, and Monthly Payments
A car lease payment has two components: depreciation and finance charge. The depreciation portion equals (cap cost − residual value) ÷ term months. The finance charge equals (cap cost + residual value) × money factor. The money factor is the lease equivalent of interest rate — multiply by 2,400 to get the approximate APR. Residual value is the car's predicted worth at lease end, expressed as a percentage of MSRP. A higher residual means lower payments. The capitalized cost (cap cost) is the negotiated price of the car — lower is better. A cap cost reduction (down payment) reduces the net cap cost and lowers your monthly payment, but unlike a loan down payment, it's not returned if the car is totaled. Always negotiate the selling price before discussing lease terms.
