Electricity Cost Calculator — How to Calculate kWh and Electricity Bills
Electricity is measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh). To calculate usage: multiply the appliance wattage by hours used per day, then divide by 1,000 to get kWh/day. Multiply by your electricity rate (found on your utility bill, typically $0.10–$0.20/kWh in the US) to get the daily cost. Multiply by 30 for monthly and by 365 for annual costs. The biggest energy consumers in most homes are heating/cooling (central AC: 3,500W), water heaters (4,500W), and electric dryers (5,000W). LEDs use 75% less power than incandescent bulbs. A typical US household uses about 900 kWh per month, with an average bill of $117. To reduce costs: switch to LED lighting, use programmable thermostats, unplug devices on standby (vampire power), and run dishwashers/washers in off-peak hours.
